Sierra is graduating from the University of Missouri with a Bachelor of Arts in English with a concentration in creative writing. She has many fond memories of her time at Mizzou, many of which connected to all the service opportunities provided to her through the school and her sorority, Sigma Sigma Sigma. She worked with her sorority sisters throughout each year doing philanthropic work for the Sigma Sigma Sigma Foundation, a foundation that benefits the Robbie Page Memorial Fund, which provides therapeutic play programs to children’s hospitals, as well the March of Dimes, which helps fund infant prematurity research and provide support for those families with premature babies. She also enjoyed serving during the annual Caring for Columbia event, a day dedicated to giving back to the city of Columbia, and was lucky to work as a Service Site Leader during her last year of the event.
Beyond Caring for Columbia, Sierra’s favorite events during the school year were Homecoming and Greek Week, both opportunities to immerse herself in the amazing community at Mizzou. Working with Tri Sigma as their Greek Week Service Liaison and Bid Day Chair were among her best memories, but by far her favorite experiences were her study abroad trips. She will always be thankful for the opportunity to immerse herself in Spanish while exploring Costa Rica and the connections she made with the wonderful children she taught English to in Vietnam.
When not traveling, working at Starbucks, or nannying for the most amazing family in the world, Sierra was very lucky to be able to work through the English department in two incredible internships with Persea Books and Wigleaf.com. She loved being able to learn more about the small press publishing world, spending many afternoons sorting through the hundreds of submissions Persea receives each year for their Lexi Rudnitsky First Book Prize. Her time at Persea helped prepare her for the world of flash fiction at Wigleaf, an online literary journal that publishes fiction in 1,000 words or less. She left each Wigleaf meeting smiling and often inspired by the short-fiction submissions brought to the table each week. Both internships have only made her passion for writing and literature grow while showing her the many different sides and inner workings of the publishing world.
While Sierra will miss Mizzou and Columbia very much, after graduation she plans on moving to New York City to pursue a career in book publishing. She is thankful for her family’s never-ending support and all the friends who have helped encourage her along the way, both of which she knows she wouldn’t have been to succeed without. Moving into this next chapter, she is excited to see what the future has in store and will always be a Mizzou Tiger at heart.
